'Living in a Material World' CPD for Architects, Builders & Engineers - Cairns September 14

Mecca & Arup
CPD Seminar for Architects, Builders & Engineers
Living in a Material World - Cairns, September 14

"Understanding Materials - Steel, Aluminium & Glass"

In creating the buildings we inhabit, designers, builders and engineers are increasingly taking a more sophisticated approach to their use of materials.

We now see huge developments in metals, glass, stone, brick, cement & timber and composites, as well as construction, manufacturing processes and product design.

By better understanding the form and function of materials and where and when certain materials can/cannot be used, building professionals can:
  1. Ensure buildings are fit and safe to occupy
  2. Expand the boundaries of their designs and offer better outcomes for clients
  3. Minimise ongoing and costly refit and/or maintenance issues
This seminar, to be presented by Arup will consider our most important building materials that occupy over half of a buildings volume ............. Steel, Metals & Glass.

Attendees will learn:
  • How the use of these materials has developed over time
  • How modern manufacturing systems have changed their use and expanded options for builders and designers
  • The dangers and opportunities in "off shore procurement of building materials " and how builders and architects can mitigate risk
  • Case studies of incorrect specifications and material applications "not fit for purpose" and how to avoid
  • Where are we headed with materials?.... what the future holds including leading worldwide innovations with materials
  • New developments in 3D-printing. After so much talk, have we finally found a way to make 3D printing work for the building industry?
  • Innovative use of steel & glass in major design projects in Australia
Jonathan McCray is a materials engineer for Arup in Sydney and previously worked in London, in Arup’s Advanced Technology and Research group (Sept 2014—Sept 2016) and earlier (Jan 2012—Sept 2014)
